Hello fellow gorey friends
I moved to boston last year and FINALLY was able to make it to Yarmouth to see his beautiful home yesterday....
it was something i will never forget- very lovely and not what I expected
its not overly marketed and something you
have to be on the watch out for. I was kind of expecting it to be more obvious and lines of people.
first off there is a MASSIVE magnolia tree on the rear side of his home, very rare and unseen in new england with
our frigid temps.
its scent and blooms were transcending.
my family has one on our farm in missouri and when i got out of the car and saw it, I felt so at home.
they have a sculpture of the doubtful guest in the backyard that made me smile.
the house was wonderful, and they have a huge fat cat there to roam the house they rescued, he fit right in.
its a small tour but to see his amazing big silver rings and pendants and his little sewn creatures and original
works was just amazing. the kitchen was great, lots of rocks on the counters and glass bottles as how he kept it.

going to his home is for the true gorey fan, i want to go back just to feel what i felt again. the visit took me somewhere
else outside of this realm if you know what i mean. his presence was felt there and it made me love him even more.
i will post some of the pics i took while there.

Just found this tribe. You people are hilarious! Ok, you've got some great material to work with, but still. I sent my brother a Gorey-a-day calender for 2006. Imagine my pleasure when I visited him in October and saw that the date was current on it. I rarely have that kind of success getting him gifts.
I have to admit, in the past, my exposing friends to Edward Gorey has never gone over very well. I actually had my first roommate at college move out after I plastered the Gashleycrumb tinies on the wall. (Well, she wanted the room themed with Winnie the Pooh in pink and beige.)
The tiger lillies are a strange band, you must hear to understand. They have another great album called "shockhead peter" based on morbid children's tales from the 19th century. I'm sure shockhead peter was one of Gorey's influences, right up there with miss mortimer's "the peep of day"

It's the most appalling example of plagiarism I've ever seen. Everything in it is a blatant ripoff of Edward Gorey. The most egregious example is the panel "The body festered Malodorously." It's an illustration of a dead woman lying face-down in the street - but the woman is _exactly_ like Mona from the last panel of Gorey's "The Loathsome Couple." Position, hair, hands, everything is the same. The only things Wu did to change it were to add some flowers to Mona's dress and change the background.
"Here's a glimpse at Peep's terrifying opening chapter:

God has covered your bones with flesh. Your flesh is soft and warm.

In your flesh there is blood. God has put skin outside, and it covers your flesh and blood like a coat... How kind of God it was to give you a body! I hope that your body will not get hurt.... Will your bones break? -- Yes, they would, if you were to fall down from a high place, or if a cart were to go over them....

How easy it would be to hurt your poor little body!

If it were to fall into the fire, it would be burned up. If a great knife were run through your body, the blood would come out. If a great box were to fall on your head, your head would be crushed. If you were to fall out of the window, your neck would be broken. If you were not to eat some food for a few days, your little body would be very sick, your breath would stop, and you would grow cold, and you would soon be dead."
it's such a gorey story.

The Gorey End, Writer/Illustrator Edward Gorey enjoyed 'Banging in the Nails' so much he sent us a large box of his unpublished stories, some of which we adapted and turned into songs. Then, before he could hear them, Mr Gorey passed away. So sad. But here are those songs, with the Kronos Quartet providing strings and barks, on our new CD The Gorey End. We think he would have enjoyed them. If he hadn't passed away. Tragically.

The card game, Gloom, from Atlas Games, is a "Game of Inconspicuous Incidents and Grave Consequences." The object is to be MISERABLE, while making your fellow players happy, in which case they lose the game.

The singular career of Edward Gorey is impossible to adequately characterize, in part because his work articulates the tension between exaggerated opposites at every step. The style of his work and the simplicity of his verse superficially resemble books for children, but the intense macabre of his stories and their relentless existential interrogations bely our every tendency to treat him lightly. Likewise, though there is an unmistakeable cartoonish-quality to his illustation, close examination reveals an astonishing precision, care, and attention to detail.

I think this explains in part the curious power and profundity that his images convey. Like myth, his stories present and in some way mediate the deep paradoxes of our experience. His stories are short, much as the poems of the Modernist poets are short. It is not that Gorey has little to say; rather, he speaks so well that precious few words are required.

Complementing Gorey's stylistic precision and excellence, the images that surface from his best tales are unmistakeably illuminating in the curious way that parable is illuminating. Something is communicated, but it is difficult to say exactly what it is.

Gorey is a singular emmisary of the Dream Works, wholely and unmistakeably himself in each stroke of the pen.
