i just love the "ennui" illustration...those two little eyes peering listlessly over the window sill.

It cracks me up every time!

The whole book is a crack up Terry, I even love the front and back covers. What a clever fellow Gorey was, do you have the boxed set? That one along "the Insect God" and "The West Wing” are an interesting grouping. I often wondered why he selected such varied items, but that, in and of itself, probably is the reason.

My friend Francesco, noted that the "rare and unique" poster of the "tinies" comes up for bid quite often on ebay. HA!

      ): )~

One of my all-time favorite Gorey rhyme is from The Insect God:

O feelings of anger, resentment and pity
For things which so seldom work out for the best!

          :
The car, unobserved, sped away from the city
As the last of the light died out in the west.

Terry, I love the antennae in the accompanying drawing. I think I’ve actually seen the driver around Los Angeles, or maybe it was a cell phone.

The children skeletons on the box spine of “The Vinegar Works” proved also a nice touch.

How many folks counted the little grave markers to see if he put them all in place “after the outing”? I have to admit I did, and counted heads on the cover as well!

dying of ennui has always struck a chord with me.

    i also dig:

T is for Titus who flew into bits.

    and

Z is for Zillah who drank too much gin.

Little bits o Titus all over the place!

Anticipation produced in his illustrations is executed extremely well in this book; Kate is only one of a couple that the aftermath is presented to us (aside from the graves on the back).

          you are sooo right!

i got my friends a magnet of H is for Hector done in by a thug--one of my fave g-crumb illustrations. it's even more wonderful because it is just the drawing, sans caption.

          MUhahahahahaaaa...(evil laughter)

K is for Kate who was struck with an axe.

It's one of the few where you don't see the child just prior to the accident.

    Does that make me wrong?

X is for Xerxes, devoured by mice. It's such a fabulously ridiculous concept. And nothing can beat that dim little illustration of poor Xerxes, with an innocently small number of mice creeping up on him...

You've already named my favorite (poor Titus). I'm also fond of:
Olive run through with an awl
and for some reason I'm particularly drawn to the illustration of
Desmond thrown out of a sleigh
