Wed, June 22, 2005 - 6:33 PMMy mom saw this book when I took a few books back to show my little brother on vacation. We were laughing hard when she picked it up and simply said "You two are sick" and walked away. -

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 11:49 PMBasil/Bears always made me laugh to myself...
One of the first things I did when I got hired at me present job (during the last century) was to photocopy/enlarge A-Z and plaster them in the most prominent and visible space in my cubicle... Now that I have and office I really need to put them back up! Thanks for reminding me guys...
There's just something about the bear that is incredibly funny!

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 8:55 PMi just love the "ennui" illustration...those two little eyes peering listlessly over the window sill.
It cracks me up every time! -

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 11:04 PMThe whole book is a crack up Terry, I even love the front and back covers. What a clever fellow Gorey was, do you have the boxed set? That one along "the Insect God" and "The West Wing” are an interesting grouping. I often wondered why he selected such varied items, but that, in and of itself, probably is the reason.
My friend Francesco, noted that the "rare and unique" poster of the "tinies" comes up for bid quite often on ebay. HA!

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 9:53 AMOne of my all-time favorite Gorey rhyme is from The Insect God:
O feelings of anger, resentment and pity
For things which so seldom work out for the best!

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 10:48 AM:
The car, unobserved, sped away from the city
As the last of the light died out in the west.
Terry, I love the antennae in the accompanying drawing. I think I’ve actually seen the driver around Los Angeles, or maybe it was a cell phone.
The children skeletons on the box spine of “The Vinegar Works” proved also a nice touch.
How many folks counted the little grave markers to see if he put them all in place “after the outing”? I have to admit I did, and counted heads on the cover as well! -

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?
Thu, January 19, 2006 - 11:19 PMX is for Xerxes devoured by mice.
Eaten alive by tiny rodents--how perfectly Goreyesque. And bonus points for using the name Xerxes!
This is a silly but amusing link to a quiz that will tell you which Gashlycrumb death YOU will die:

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?
Sat, June 25, 2005 - 9:38 AMLittle bits o Titus all over the place!
Anticipation produced in his illustrations is executed extremely well in this book; Kate is only one of a couple that the aftermath is presented to us (aside from the graves on the back). -

Wed, December 21, 2005 - 11:13 AMK is for Kate who was struck with an axe.
It's one of the few where you don't see the child just prior to the accident.
Does that make me wrong?

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?
Fri, September 22, 2006 - 8:24 PMX is for Xerxes, devoured by mice. It's such a fabulously ridiculous concept. And nothing can beat that dim little illustration of poor Xerxes, with an innocently small number of mice creeping up on him...

Re: favorite gashlycrumb?
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 6:48 AMYou've already named my favorite (poor Titus). I'm also fond of:
Olive run through with an awl
and for some reason I'm particularly drawn to the illustration of
Desmond thrown out of a sleigh
