hello everybody!
I need to get this off my chest ...
Starbucks has these execrable rip-offs of Gorey's inimitable illustrating style for their dumb-ass holiday marketing.
I have seen print and billboard versions.
anyone else seen these things ?
yeah, yeah, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. but puh-leeze... Starbucks co-opting our beloved subversive genius ???
anyone share my umbrage at this sacrilege ??

Re: Starbucks Gorey-influenced holiday ad campaign
Sun, November 20, 2005 - 5:16 PMFunny you should post this. I was wondering the very same thing myself! I scanned the cup for some sort of artist credit but found none. Very Gorey-esque indeed and so sad that they couldn't either be more original or at least get permission to use the likeness or style, or give credit for it...
I don't think it is dumb, just a sorry rip-off. -

Re: Starbucks Gorey-influenced holiday ad campaign
Mon, November 28, 2005 - 3:10 PMI dont like it either, its very Gorey-esque, but that is exactly how they get away with it I'm guessing. It's not HIS work, it's only INSPIRED by it... *gags quietly* -

Re: Starbucks Gorey-influenced holiday ad campaign
Mon, November 28, 2005 - 9:14 PMGag me with a Gorey ax! *Loud with a ca-whoop in the back* But that's just my gut reaction to Starbucks anyway. If you're going to drink from a mug (vs. gin bottle) make it Gorey and good Joe.

Re: Starbucks Gorey-influenced holiday ad campaign
Thu, January 12, 2006 - 5:21 PMI hate it! Mostly because it's badly drawn and Ted would not have liked that.
I hope the Estate sues Starbucks for Royalties! :)
