This has to be Gorey inspired. I'd never heard of it until I saw an add just now.
Anyone well aquainted with the works?

Re: Edgar and Ellen?
Wed, December 21, 2005 - 6:25 PMI think I have seen dolls (possibly at Tower records) but may have confused them with the work of illustrator Charles Addams (creator of Addams family). He is another in the macabre vein that I adore.

Re: Edgar and Ellen?
Fri, January 20, 2006 - 9:28 AMHi. In doing an online search, I was excited to come across your message because I work on Edgar & Ellen. You're right that Edgar & Ellen are in part Gorey inspired. When I mentioned your post to the illustrator of the book series, Rick Carton, he said "Every little black line in the E&E books comes from my love of Gorey." Have you read any of the books? The first two, Rare Beasts and Tourist Trap, just became available as of Jan 1. -

Re: Edgar and Ellen?
Fri, January 20, 2006 - 9:44 AMAh! Well good to know! Actually, I haven't been to a new book store since I found out about them, so I haven't had a chance to look them up.
I'm at least happy to know that the demise of our beloved Mr. Gorey has not left the world completely deprived of his style of humor and art. -

Re: Edgar and Ellen?
Thu, January 26, 2006 - 3:34 PMI'm glad that you're enjoying the site. In fact, if you're interested in seeing some Gorey inspired book art, on the edgarandellen.com website, you can see all of the book illustrations under the Gallery Section. And don't worry. Gorey's talent is still inspiring Rick, the illustrator of the Edgar & Ellen series. In fact, he's working on the illustrations of the 6th book right now. More to come.... -

What about Emily?
Fri, January 27, 2006 - 2:41 PMHave any of you seen those t-shirts they sell at "hip" (snort) places in malls, like Hot Topic? With this Emily character, a very gothic and miserable little girl? If those aren't inspired by (or ripoffs of) Gorey, well, I'll eat one.

Re: What about Emily?
Fri, January 27, 2006 - 7:32 PMEmily has been around for years now and I'd *never* say she's a rip-off of Gorey!
Just because something is spooky certainly doesn't make it a rip off! -

Re: What about Emily?
Fri, January 27, 2006 - 11:34 PMit seems like a little while ago it became a "thing" for everyone to design some sort of little ill-tempered and/or bitter and/or funny and cute little goth girl to put on all of their clothes. some are cool, but after a while they became annoying and stupid to me.
i just got a gorey-illustrated book called "donald has a difficulty" written by peter f. neumeyer...it's so lovely...! -

Two different things
